date: 11 OCT 2009 NOTES from Interview in the USS Indy Radio room with: Paul (bud ) Miller (88 years old) Franklin Ind from Indianapolis originally... Served during WWII as Radioman from 1943-1945..on the USS Mt McKinley (AG-70) Communication Ship Call sign [ NTXC ] (original USS Cyclone) Radio gear was Hallicrafters..! & IBM Typewriters (say's you needed muscles!) Short fingers weren't a plus. Communication ships were named after Mountains..! The Mt Mckinley had 600 crewmembers and served in the South Pacific campaigns. He was a T-SGT in the US Army assigned to the ship . He trained in MO for Radioman duties & NY for crypto & high speed CW. His Ship was a converted Troop transport ship; it had the 1st Marines on it and he has 4 Bronze stars from South Pacific Battles. ....Philippines, Okinawa, & others "BUD" was the 1st Radioman visitor to be interviewed in the USS Indy radio room While he sat at one of the radio receiver benches he could still send Morse code. He told us about his memories of the war both bad & good... good- was the Bob Hope shows and movie star visits. USO shows. He was in Tokyo for the Armistice signing. Bad-US soldiers dying on beeches during battles. Bud returned to the Bookbinding business after the WAR. by chuck crist
